It’s wedding season, y’all… and whether you’re planning a wedding, or you just got asked to be in one, there’s one thing that strikes dread in almost all soon-to-be-bridesmaids’ hearts: the ugly bridesmaid dress.
If you’re a bride:
- Be considerate of your bridesmaids’ heights, figures, and complexions. Try to pick colors and gown shapes that will flatter them. Your wedding pictures will turn out better if the dress complements your bridesmaids, and they feel comfortable wearing it.
- Before bridesmaid dress shopping, create a Pinterest board to show your bridesmaids the different styles of dresses you like and the dress color theme. Once this has been narrowed down, consider allowing your bridesmaids to pick a dress that falls in that range. Gone are the days where every bridal party wears the exact same dress. Many brides choose to have their bridesmaids wear different styles of dresses that are all the same color, or fit the same theme.
- Listen to your bridesmaids’ opinions, and make them part of the dress picking process. If you can, let them vote on your top 5 dress picks. Choosing a simple gown that flatters them, will allow your bridesmaids to be able to wear the dress again. Also be considerate of your bridesmaids’ time and budget. Your bridesmaids are your best friends, and being in the bridal party is both time consuming and expensive.
- Many friends have different styles, and that’s ok. Remember it’s your wedding, and at the end of the day, you have the final say. But try to be open to your bridesmaids’ opinions and feelings about a dress; it can go along way. Your bridesmaids will appreciate it and most likely return the favor when they ask you to be a bridesmaid.
